Warlock Lair 9: The Returners’ Tower

$

0

I will light a beacon bright enough to reach the very edge of our world. Every creature will see our greatest hope—the return of the elves.

Tarrini, a small border town between Valera and Triolo, has been a reluctant addition to the Valeran territories. A resentment toward the Valeran rulership simmers, and a fully equipped military garrison is stationed there indefinitely. Several ruined elven towers persist in the hills around the town, and it is there, in one such tower, that the Returners lurk and plot.

A short adventure for 5th Edition heroes of 4th and 5th level, written by Jon Sawatsky and with cartography by Dyson Logos.

Adventure In a Dark World of Deep Magic!

It is an age of war. Civilization slowly gives way to encroaching wilderness, and once-mighty empires now lie beneath the waves. Only magic and the warmth of hope keeps lights aglow when dread things prowl, and priestly wardings are bent by demonic rage.

The omens are dire. The roads to the shadow realm are open again, and the fey have returned to claim their ancient tribute. In the north the giants prepare for Ragnarok, while the goblins in the west grow restless. In the Crossroads, the shadow of the vampire princes falls across the land. The World Serpent is stirring—and not even all-knowing Baba Yaga can say what will happen next.

Now more than ever, Midgard needs heroes to stand against the dark, driving it back with spell, steel, and cunning!

The 460-page Midgard Worldbook includes:

  • Detailed description of Midgard’s empires, cities, and kingdoms, with associated heraldry, rulers, and adventure hooks for each state, large or small
  • Characters from Baba Yaga to the lords of the Dragon Empire, from the honest folk of Zobeck to various elven holdouts of Dornig and the vampire lords of Morgau
  • Full lore on the pantheons of the Northlands, Crossroads, Elves, and others, including divine domain lists, rituals, divine demands, and the various masks and sacred texts—plus rituals and ambitions of the Dark Gods, for the GM’s eyes alone!
  • Revised and expanded lore of the planes, history, calendars, and conflicts of the world
  • Forbidden lore of blood magic, void magic, and various dooms and items not meant for players’ eyes!
  • And much more!

As he fled angry wyverns some years ago, an ambitious sorcerer, named Ghoss, discovered a great secret in the Dragoncoil mountains. A naturally formed tunnel led from the upper world into the belly of the mountains. Hinting at what lay below, hot sulfuric air rose through the tunnel. Slowly the sorcerer descended until he came to a massive cavern where the stone path ended and looked out over a spectacular set of magma falls. He climbed onto a ledge near the falls and peered down; the flows of liquid stone fell away into unseen depths, straight into the fires of the Eleven Hells.

This short adventure in the Dragon Empire ventures into wyvern country, and features a new corrupted elemental, the Incinis. Designed for 5th Edition heroes of 9th level, this adventure is written by Jon Sawatsky and features cartography by Dyson Logos.

Perhaps the most gripping legends, however, whisper of the Dusk Queen’s sudden and mysterious disappearance … and her even more mysterious return.

Lo! The corpse of poor, departed Scholar Zubayr, washed up on the shores of the River of Sand, lies in the charnel house…destined to become dinner for a cult of cannibals. Though distasteful in the extreme, this isn’t your concern—except that Princess Karima Gamila, the most beautiful gnoll in Per-Bastet, has begged you to rescue her friend’s body and help discover his fate.
Still unmoved to action? Know then, adventurer, that the Scholar was hot on the trail of lost treasure! If you can claim his body from the cult and decipher the clues he left behind, long-buried riches and powerful magic might be yours.
But nothing is simple in this city of dark wonders: others converge on the charnel house in pursuit of wealth, vengeance, or both. Can you out-fight and outwit vile cultists, undead catfolk, a cunning werecrocodile gnoll, and the deadly secrets that lie buried beneath the River of Sand?
Grimalkin is an adventure for 3rd to 5th level characters and compatible with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Set in the city of Per-Bastet in the Southlands Campaign Setting, it is meant for play either as the thrilling sequel to Cat and Mouse, or as a standalone treasure hunt!

For years, the Helari family of Vidim were among the most reputable and rich folk in the kingdom. The family matriarch, Sianis Helari, was a powerful rune caster, and she used her magic for betterment of all the civilized places in the North. But she changed when her youngest son, Thurich, died (he was torn to pieces by the Jotun, giants inhabiting the mountainous regions of Jotunheim, and his remains were partly devoured by wolves). With her son’s death, Sianis retreated from the world and fell into shadow and obscurity. Rumors circulated that Sianis looked for a way to restore her son.

Eventually the Helari family faded from memory, though not before a frightening tale emerged from the region near the tomb. The story told of a massive black cloud that arrived from nowhere and sat unmoving in the wind for seven days near the Helari family crypt. In the snowy mountainous region of the Duchy of Domovogrod, hunters reported dark songs echoing from the crypt until, on the eve of the seventh day, a great rune appeared in the cloud. Recoiling from the bare evil of the magical symbol, the hunters fled from their trap lines and refused to return.

Today, the crypt has sat undisturbed for nearly a century. Will your heroes dare to uncover its secrets?

This short adventure is designed for 5th Edition heroes of 7th and 8th leve. This adventure is written by Jon Sawatsky and features cartography by Dyson Logos.

Recently, the forgotten city of Anu-Asir, long buried in the desert, has been re-discovered. Would-be explorers, scholars, and thieves have come from far and wide to harvest the ancient city’s secrets, but one organization, Golden Falcon Antiquities, wrangled exclusive permission to lead the excavation and exploration efforts. This well-funded team has been preparing this massive undertaking for the last several weeks, and the city is abuzz with what will be uncovered.

All of this activity was about to come to a screeching halt, however, because the High Councilor of Antiquities of Per-Bastet discovered that the plagues and curses that destroyed Anu-Asir might return if the ancient city were disturbed. A day before he could give the order to halt all activity, he was attacked and killed in his chambers by a swarm of deadly scorpions.

The timing seemed quite convenient, and the sting of the scorpion cult rarely lands but once—adventure awaits those who dare to investigate!

This short adventure is designed for five 1st level characters. This 5th Edition adventure is written by Chris Harris and features cartography by Dyson Logos and art by Karl Waller.

High in the coastal cliffs east of Stannasgard, the proud dwarven city of forges and ships, an ancient fortress sits empty, facing the sea. The dwarves discovered the place before they built Stannasgard, and those early settlers named the place Binalric, the watcher’s keep. At first, the dwarves thought it perfect to house them as they planned their city and sourced the stone it required, but the fortress proved inhospitable in long-forgotten ways. A few old stories still circulate through the dwarven capitol about Binalric, but none now live who remember why their ancestors preferred hide tents along the beach to the stone walls of that desolate place.

A scholar visiting Stannasgard claimed the place once belonged to a lost clan of seafaring dwarves, whose reach extended far and wide. The scholar believe Binalric was a vault where the dwarves kept some of their most valuable artifacts. She attempted to mount an expedition into the fortress, but she could not find enough willing souls in Stannasgard and moved on.

Today, the fortress is empty, housing only cold wind and memories. What treasures remain within its cold stone walls?

This short adventure is designed for five 1st and 2nd level characters. This 5th Edition adventure is written by Jon Sawatsky and features cartography by Dyson Logos and art by Karl Waller.

Keep Aunun is the seat of a domain in the Grand Duchy of Dornig, right along the eastern border of the Arbonesse Forest. It is well known for its fine farmland, cattle, and horses, and the keep itself marks the western edge of a small town. And yet things are not peaceful of late; the Dornish are distressed by nightly kidnappings that have resulted in over a dozen people missing. Lord Roth Cereck Aunun, ruler of the area, has offered a reward of 2,500 gp to anyone who can end the abductions.

Unfortunately, earning this reward may require tampering with the Shadow Realm because a gateway to shadow, lost during the Black Sorceress’ Revolt, has returned. The gateway reveals a fragment of the shadow road and its missing watchhouse, once used by the Courts of the Shadow Fey to support raids on Dornish lands. The reappearance of the watchhouse is not yet well known in the Courts, and certain quite dangerous individuals are taking advantage of its return.

This short, shadow-infused adventure is designed for four 6th or 7th level characters. This 5th Edition adventure is written by Carlos Ovalle and Holly Ovalle, and it features cartography by Dyson Logos and art by Karl Waller.
